Young Veterans Pilot program a Success
National Trust of Australia (Queensland) has partnered with Currumbin RSL and Young Veterans to pilot an innovative program for returned veterans. As part of the National; Trust’s commitment to community, we have devised a program called Veterans for Wildlife hosted by Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary and Hospital.
The program aims to:
- encourage involvement in community activities
- reduce social isolation
- increase social connectedness
- increase mental wellness
- provide a pathway for volunteer work and/or study
We all know that animals can give people a sense of purpose and for many years therapy animals have been used to assist people suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder. This same thinking was applied through our program offering interaction with animals that reside in the Sanctuary as well as through wildlife patients of the hospital.
