New Leadership Unveiled: National Trust Queensland Welcomes President Mark Townend AM and Deputy President Glenys Schuntner

The National Trust of Australia (Queensland) bids farewell to the remarkable Gina Palmer, who dedicated 5 years as a Director and 2 years as President. Her retirement at the Annual General Meeting on December 2, 2023, marks the end of an era characterised by unwavering commitment and impactful leadership.

During her tenure, Palmer actively served on critical committees, including the Nomination and Governance Committee and the Audit and Risk Committee. She also represented Queensland at the Australian Council of National Trusts, leaving an indelible mark on the organisation's governance, operating structures, and risk management strategies. Palmer's steadfast support for the Leadership team and her collaborative efforts towards ensuring the National Trust's financial sustainability and responsible management are deeply appreciated.

New President: Mark Townend AM

Stepping into the shoes of Gina Palmer is Mark Townend AM, a current Board Director since 2020. Mark officially assumed the role of President on December 2, 2023, and expressed his gratitude for Palmer's commendable work. With a focus on heritage asset restoration, improved maintenance, and the ongoing development of Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, Mark is poised to lead the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) into its next chapter.

Mark Townend brings a wealth of experience spanning a decade in local government, commercial, and not-for-profit sectors. His 19-year tenure as CEO of RSPCA Queensland and subsequent role as CEO of Spinal Life Australia demonstrate his expertise in organisational development, process improvements, innovation, strategic planning, and fostering motivated workplace cultures. As a Member of the Order of Australia (AM) and a recipient of the Prime Minister’s Federation Medal, Mark's leadership is an asset to the National Trust.

New Deputy President: Glenys Schuntner

Glenys Schuntner assumes the position of Deputy President, commencing her role on December 2, 2023. Based in Townsville, Glenys is a highly skilled executive and experienced Board Director with strong family roots in Brisbane. Her extensive career, including 17 years as CEO of two not-for-profit organisations in Townsville, reflects her commitment to economic development and tourism marketing in the north.

Glenys brings a wealth of experience and skills, including leadership, management, trade and investment, government relations and advocacy, and tourism development and marketing. Her passion for heritage, conservation, and community benefits led her to become a member of the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) and subsequently take on a role on the Board in 2021. Currently, Glenys serves as the Director of the National Trust of Australia (Queensland) and chairs the Nominations and Governance Committee.
