May 18, 2024, 10:00 AM – 11:30 AM
A must-do for visitors to the Towers is to explore the rich connections to the past. At 150 years old, the Venus Gold Battery (Mill) stands as a testament to history, having crushed ore from underground mines to extract valuable gold. Embark on an immersive audio-visual journey and guided tour to uncover the intricate process of gold extraction during the vibrant North Queensland gold rush.
Situated on the outskirts of Charters Towers, the Venus Gold Battery is both the oldest and largest surviving battery in Queensland. Erected in 1872, this crushing mill served as a vital hub for gold extraction for over a century. The resounding thuds of its colossal stampers echoed day and night, tirelessly extracting precious gold from quartz until the mill ceased operations in 1973.
