Celebrating 150 Years
Apr 15, 2021, 10:00 AM – 3:00 PM
Brennan & Geraghty's Store celebrates 150 years since opening in 1871. Patrick Brennan & Martin Geraghty opened their Commercial Store on the 15th of April 1871. The business continued to trade until 1972 when it was closed by Geraghty's youngest son George. George closed the Store complete with its unsold stock, advertising material and trading records.
The National Trust purchased the Geraghty Complex, comprising the Store, Stables and two associated houses embarking on a massive conservation program that continues today. The Store opened as a museum about itself and its place in the community of Maryborough in November 1990.
Come along and enjoy 150 years of Queensland's History. Our guides will be happy to engage you with stories from the past to help you remember stores from your own past. Brennan & Geraghty could not have foreseen shopping in 2021 or how much their world of merchandising would change from shopping in a Store to shopping in an on-line environment. We are continually indexing the historic ledgers and will have some examples on display. Perhaps your ancestor may have shopped in this store, come along and check our customer index to find out.
Due to the state of the world at present, our event has been scaled back to allow for adequate social distancing.
